As a business owner when was the last time you achieved great success?

Now let’s think a little more about the situation you were in. Perhaps you won that amazing new contract that has transformed the future of your business, or perhaps you just implemented new ways of working which has seen a big uptick in efficiency.

Regardless of your big success let us ask you a question.

In that scenario were you decisive in your decision making?

I bet the answer was a resounding YES!

You see for anything or anyone to be successful you must be decisive. You cannot expect to have any great success if you are not 110% committed in what you are doing.

To quote one of sports’ top psychology coaches Dr Bob Rotella “It’s more important to be decisive than it is to be correct”.

Indeed, there are many parallels between the game of golf and business. Let’s take a closer look at some famous golf quotes and apply them back to business.

1.    “Hit the shot you know you can hit, not the one you think you should” (Dr Bob Rotella), It’s so important in business to play in the area that you specialise in. Don’t try and compete in areas where others are better than you

2.    “The most important shot in golf is the next one” (Ben Hogan) – Don’t rest on your laurels. Just because you had success in the past doesn’t automatically mean you will be successful in the future. You need to keep evolving….think Toys R’ Us, Blockbuster, HMV etc … this list goes on!

3.    “I never learned anything from a match I won” (Bobby Jones) – Learn from your mistakes. Don’t be resentful, dust yourself down and make sure you don’t make the same mistake twice

4.    “You don’t know what pressure is until you play for 5 bucks with only 2 bucks in your pocket” (Lee Trevino) – Never overly exert yourself financially. Cash is the lifeblood of any business. It’s a very precious commodity in business so look after it like your life depends on it….because it does!

5.    “Nobody asked how you looked, just what you shot” (Sam Snead) – Make sure you focus on results. Whilst it’s nice to look great on the back of your latest expensive marketing campaign, if you don’t produce the results then you need to pivot

6.    “Concentration comes out of a combination of confidence and hunger” (Arnold Palmer) – Believe in your product/service and have the hunger/determination to make it great. If you don’t believe then don’t expect your customers to

7.    “Of all the hazards, fear is the worst” (Sam Snead) – Don’t hold yourself back through fear. Believe in what you do and go smash those targets. If you don’t believe you can be successful then don’t be surprised when you fail

8.    “Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated” (Arnold Palmer) – Don’t overcomplicate things. Business should be simple. You build/develop products/services, you market them, you sell them and you deliver them. Whoever does this the best, wins!

9.    “The more I practice, the luckier I get” (Gary Player) – Keep on practicing until you become brilliant. You will never be perfect but you can get pretty close if you put in the work to practice and perfect

10. “Don’t be too proud to take lessons, I’m not” (Jack Nicklaus) – We all need help from time to time. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness
